COURSE DESCRIPTION 

Leading and managing a project is a major responsibility with several stake-holders interest to be managed. The course is designed to improve participants readiness to manage, execute, track and finally deliver end-results that meets project expectations.

  • Defining scope of success in projects 

  • Understand the role of financial management in project success 

  • Identify key financial responsibilities of project managers 


Module 2: Cost Concepts, Structures and Classifications 

  • Differentiate between: 

    • Direct costs 

    • Indirect costs 

    • Fixed costs 

    • Variable costs 

    • Overhead costs 

  • Understand CAPEX vs OPEX in project planning 

  • Mapping cost elements to a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) 


Module 3: Project Budgeting Techniques and Tools 

  • Build a project budget using bottom-up and top-down methods 

  • Apply analogous, parametric and three-point estimating 

  • Understand contingency, reserves and cost buffers 


Module 4: Cost Baseline and Financial Planning 

  • Develop a cost baseline aligned with project scheduled 

  • Understand cash flow planning and disbursement timing 

  • Baselines to support monitoring and control 

 

Module 5: Cost Tracking and Variance Analysis 

  • Track actual vs planned costs 

  • Performance variance analysis (CV, SV, CPI, SPI) 

  • Interpret financial performance indicators 


Module 6: Earned Value Management (EVM) Essentials 

  • Understand EVM concepts: PV, EV, AC 

  • Calculate performance indices and forecasts 

  • Use EVM to predict project outcomes 


Module 7: Forecasting Cash Flow and Financial Decision Making 

  • Apply Estimate at Completion (EAC) and Estimate to Complete (ETC) 

  • Build cash flow projections 

  • Evaluate financial scenarios and trade-offs 


Module 8: Cost Control Strategies & Corrective Actions 

  • Identify cost drivers and root causes of overruns 

  • Apply corrective and preventive actions 

  • Use change control processes effectively 


Module 9: Project Financial Reporting and Stakeholder Communication 

  • Prepare financial dashboard and summary reports 

  • Communicate financial status to stakeholders 

  • Align reporting with governance and audit requirements 

  • Introduction to project management software
